The Division of Student Affairs provides programs and services to support students and enrich their learning experience at Georgetown. Learning takes place in all parts of students' lives and is centered in their academic experiences. This learning is enriched by their living environments and their engagement in a wide range of co-curricular pursuits - from community service to athletics and from student government to the performing arts.

Georgetown University housing is a strategic priority given Georgetown University's campus plan goal to house 90% of all undergraduates on campus, the new downtown campus initiative which will house 400 additional undergraduate and graduate students necessitating collaboration with a specialized housing building partner and establishing a University philosophy on these partnerships, and the high priority given to renovations either through High Priority Deferred Maintenance or Capital Improvement Projects. This position has a substantial impact on the living and learning environment and the connections between the academic mission and the co-curricular experience. All undergraduate students are required to live on campus for three years; therefore, the residential environment has a unique opportunity to assist students in becoming their full authentic selves through a variety of initiatives including Living and Learning Communities, Faculty-in-Residence, Engaged Learning integration & Mission/Jesuit Values integration. The person in this position is a key leader in the Safety Net through training professional and student staff in addition to responding and working with students of concern and their families.

The Director of Residential Education directs overall operations for a large and complex residential education environment encompassing live-in and live-on residential staff for over 5,000 academic year housing undergraduates and over 12,000 summer conference guests with annual budget oversight of over two-million dollars, works with and responds to key stakeholders in organizing and managing expectations at a top ranked university in an urban and resource-constrained environment, develops relationships with key campus partners, works collaboratively with the Director of Residential Services for overall strategic management of the Office of Residential Living, and utilizes technology and assessment to support the mission. The Director makes presentations regarding housing to parents, prospective students and University departments, and designs and implements an inclusive residential environment conducive to learning and engagement. The Director plays a key role in responding to student and campus-wide emergencies and coordinating response as a member of the division-level emergency response rotation.

Primary duties include but are not limited to:

Human Resources and Organizational Management

 

 

  • Hires, trains, evaluates, and supervises two Associate Directors, and indirectly 3 Assistant Directors, 13 Masters-level full-time Community Directors, 102 Resident Assistants, 3 student workers, and 2 Graduate Assistants
  • Responds to student, parent and community concerns regarding housing policies, facilities and services.
  • Coordinates with partner offices including Planning and Facilities Management, GU Police, University Information Services, Global Education, Academic Resource Center, University Counsel to ensure standards, response, planning, and priorities
  • Plans and organizes budget supportive of goals and objectives
  • Develops long-range planning for budget, staffing structure, and resource allocation
  • Oversees training and leadership development for all employees


Leadership

 

 

  • Leads, motivates and inspires others to contribute to department success
  • Establishes policies in line with University policies, priorities, and laws
  • Develops and promotes a shared vision throughout the department with a focus on student learning, formation, development, and academic integration
  • Facilitates, implements, and evaluates goals and standards
  • Develops policies and programs consistent with and in support of institutional values, goals, and mission
  • Informs and collaborates with campus departments about issues and policies
  • Represents the department and division to internal and external constituents
  • Develops strategic relationships fostering the undergraduate living and learning experience
  • Serves on departmental, divisional, or University committees including the Disciplinary Review Committee and Case Management
  • Engages with campus partners to resolve complicated issues
  • Other duties as assigned


Emergency and Crisis Response

 

 

  • Manage crises in the residence halls, including serious accidents or psychiatric emergencies while working closely with campus partners, including CAPS, Student Outreach & Support, Health Education Services.
  • Participates in the Senior Student Affairs Staff on Duty rotation (approximately 2-3 weeks per semester and summer)
  • Receives and make phone calls on the duty cell phone when serving on duty
  • Responds after hours, including evenings and weekends, to emergency and community crises
  • Develops, maintains and properly executes departmental emergency response protocols as outline by departmental and university expectations
  • Responds to issues regarding students of concern and ensure appropriate follow up is completed
  • Serves on the Campus Emergency Response Team
  • Participates, develops, implements, and assesses the campus crisis management in the residential environment
  • Assesses risk and liability and appropriately consult with campus partners
  • Serves as an Emergency University employee
  • Serves as the lead Title IX point of contact for the Residential Education unit within the Office of Residential Living
  • Understands the legal landscape pertaining to housing policies and federal and local laws, including Title IX, ADA, ACA, & FHA

  • Ensures departmental policies, practices, structures, and systems support an inclusive environment
  • Understands and complies with local and federal regulations, particularly ADA, Fair Housing, Title IX and DC regulations
  • Trains staff regarding application of local and federal regulations
  • Provides learning opportunities that deepen knowledge, skills and awareness of self and others
  • Establishes and promote departmental policies, practices, structures, and systems support an inclusive environment
  • Creates spaces for dialogue around diversity and inclusivity in the residential community
  • Promotes pluralism, inclusiveness and sensitivity with regards to interactions with students, faculty, and staff and incorporates pluralism into leadership, training, and educational opportunities
  • Integrates equity, diversity, and inclusion into everyday work


Assessment, Benchmarking, and Technology

 

 

  • Utilizes technology to support mission, vision, and priorities of Residential Living
  • Uses emerging technologies that enhance the student experience, administrative processes and marketing and social media
  • Coordinates with Automation Analyst technology needs related to student information, processes, and applications
  • Leads, designs and promotes departmental learning outcome and assessment
  • Uses assessment results to align resources and goals


Qualifications

 

 

  • Master's Degree (in higher education or related field)
  • Minimum of 7-10 years or progressively responsible administrative and supervisory experience in higher education, especially student and community development, living and learning environments, counseling, and crisis response
  • Demonstrated knowledge of organizational, managerial, budgetary, and financial management skills
  • Experience in leading and supervising a diverse group of professional and student employees; excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communications skills
  • Understanding of legal and risk management


Preferred qualifications

 

 

  • Experience a Jesuit, Catholic educational setting with particular attention to the role that mission plays in developing students, such as demonstrated care for the whole person and supporting diversity in community;
  • Skills related to data and assessment
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a broad group of stakeholders; and knowledge of higher education, and student affairs is important
  • Must be able to work the month of August (training and residence area opening), understand and commit to the expectations inherent in an on-call staff member
  • Willing to work occasional evening and weekend hours, closing and opening of semesters
