Position Description

The Director of Student Life and Pre-College Programs leads a team of professional staff and student staff in the strategy and large initiatives involving learning and co-curricular experiences for undergraduate business students and prospective high school students. These experiences are centered on personal and professional development, leadership development, academic and career exploration, and acc limating to the campus environment, and campus involvement. The
Director collaborates with WSB faculty to manage and deliver the introductory personal and professional development courses that all new BBA students are required to take after admission to the Wisconsin BBA program. The Director is responsible for direction of the coordination and management of the BBA co-c urricular requirements; a series of out- of-classroom activities all business students must complete to earn their BBA degree. The Director of Student Life and Pre-College Programs oversees pre-college programs for high school students interested in studying business, including the residential summer program Business Emerging Leaders (BEL). In addition, the Director oversees the operations of the Accenture Leadership Center (ALC) and all co-curricular leadership and involvement opportunities for business students, including coordination of BBA student organizations, leadership development programs, and business student government (UBC).  The Director reports to the Assistant Dean of the Wisconsin BBA.

Principal duties:
Program administration (30%):

-Direct strategy for professional development initiatives to the BBA undergraduate student population

-Provide leadership for the pre-college programs, including creation and implementation of strategic plans to engage and recruit high school students from diverse ethnic, racial, socio-economic backgrounds

-Oversee the development of assessment plans to measure various programs progress and learning outcomes

-Partner with WSB Office of Diversity and Inclusion to ensure programs are aligned with outcomes and priorities of the school's diversity and inclusion strategy

-Collaborate with External Relations, Integrated Marketing Communications, and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion to develop marketing materials and increase engagement with employers and external audiences

-Manage administration of programming designed to engage both current college students and precollege students in exploration, academic planning, career development, leadership, and other aspects of professional development

-Provide academic, social, and personal support to current college students and pre-college students

-Work with academic affairs and departments on future leadership development courses and precollege initiatives

Administration and leadership (25%):

-Provide leadership, supervision, and support for full-time staff members and 30-50 student staff members and pre-college graduate assistants and student mentors

-Lead team in strategic planning around unit goals and initiatives and ensure work of the unit is aligned with the mission/vision of WSB and BBA

-Develop, propose, and manage unit's operating budget

-Interact with alumni and employers to ensure that professional development initiatives for BBA students are meeting employer needs

-Oversee tracking and meeting of key performance indicators and engage in learning assessment including alignment among subunits

-Collaborate with other BBA directors on cross-unit initiatives

-Represent the BBA Program at events, activities, conferences, and programs, internally and externally

Course coordination and leadership (15%):

-Support professional staff with recruitment, hiring, training, coaching, and supporting student facilitators and staff instructors for introductory personal and professional development courses for newly admitted business students

-Work with WSB faculty to ensure course learning outcomes and curricula are aligned with BBA learning outcomes and BBA student services that build off of course content in subsequent semesters

-Build and maintain effective working relationships with WSB staff involved in delivery of course

-Assist Student Life staff with enforcement of course policies. Meet with enrolled students in the course who are struggling or presenting problematic classroom behavior. Refer to campus resources as necessary.

-Partner with faculty to review course feedback and evaluations to ensure course is meeting stated outcomes; guide implementation of appropriate changes

-Collaborate with faculty and curriculum committee regarding course content/delivery and brainstorm ways in which other courses can build off introductory course curriculum

-Fill in for instructors or student facilitators if they cannot attend class

Co-curricular professional development administration (15%)

-Oversee and direct staff who manages co-curricular programs and student services offerings that fulfill BBA requirements (ex. career development programming, advising appointments, Excel training, etc.)

-Ensure that BBA requirements are aligned with BBA learning outcomes and goals around student learning and professional development; assess student learning on a yearly basis to make appropriate revisions or changes to the requirements

Accenture Leadership Center (ALC) and student organizations (10%):

-Oversee strategy and direction of all leadership development programs and offerings

-Manage ALC UW Foundation account and maintain effective working relationships with ALC donors

-Build relationships with business professionals to serve as guest speakers; maintain strong relationships with other leadership development offices and staff on campus (ex. Center for Leadership and Involvement)

-Support staff who oversees the coordination, management, support, and advising for 35+ BBA student organizations and business student government

-Assist with facilitation and delivery of leadership development programs and workshops

Other duties as assigned (5%)

A criminal background check will be conducted prior to hiring.

Job Requirements

Degreee and area of specialization:  Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, educational administration, counseling, or related field required. Supervisory/management experience required.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:  Minimum of 5-7 years of professional work experience in an educational setting. Knowledge of student leadership practices, student development, student organization management, and program/curriculum development is preferred. Facilitation and teaching experience preferred.  Experience working with high school students and/or undergraduate students within a professional school/college a plus.

-Experience providing student service support and advising for undergraduate college and precollege students; belief in a student-centered philosophy when making decisions, creating programs, and advising students.

-A high degree of cultural competency, a passion for working with students from underrepresented backgrounds, and a commitment to diversity and inclusion

-Ability to build relationships across different departments within WSB and across campus as well as communicate effectively with donors, prospective students and their families, alumni, employers, high school staff, and other stakeholders

-Adaptability and flexibility to work through unexpected challenges or changes

-Ability to create and enforce policies consistently and fairly for all students while keeping in mind student learning and development

-Creativity and innovative ideas to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of areas of responsibility

-Strong project and budget management experience and ability to think strategically about longterm unit objectives

-Ability to set priorities while independently handling multiple areas of responsibility

-High level of professionalism

-Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive student issues and university information
