Position Description

Essential Job Functions

  • Create a long-term vision for growth and development of the Office of Student Life.
  • Ensure MCU’s Catholic mission and tradition, social justice principles and a high degree of integrity and ethics guide the work of OSL programs, services and staff.
  • Develop relationships and collaborate with faculty and campus units to ensure Student Life programs/services strongly support student learning, the University's mission, and strategic plan.
  • Serve as an active member of the Student Development Services management team.
  • Represent the Office of Student Life and the student perspective for south bay sites in campus committees, task forces and with community partners.
  • Passion for and experience with engaging, vibrant co-curricular programming across campus to ensure diverse student needs are addressed.
  • Provide leadership for the assessment of all OSL programs and services.
  • Oversee and manage budgets for OSL ensuring sound, fiscal management.   
  • Demonstrated experience implementing student development theory into practice. 
  • Knowledge and experience with University accreditation, program review, program development and student learning assessment.
  • Supervise full-time employee: Student Life Coordinator 
  • Oversee development and implementation of an inclusive programming calendar for students throughout the academic year. Programs are designed to support the areas of the wellness model, including: social, emotional, spiritual, vocational, intellectual, cultural, and physical components.
  • Oversee development and implementation of new student orientation to welcome new students and aid in a successful transition to MCU. 
  • Oversee development and implementation of student leadership programs and initiatives through leadership roles (orientation leaders, student government) and student organizations.
  • Create effective marketing for all programs on all advertising mediums (social media and college websites).
  • Counsel and mentor students as related to their social, academic, and personal development.
  • Oversee daily use of the Student Center. 

Job Requirements

Education: Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, College Student Personnel, Student Affairs or a closely related field. 
 
Experience: At least five years progressively responsible leadership in the student development services area.  Supervision, management and program oversight in higher education required. Understanding and appreciation of Catholic higher education. 

This position requires vision, energy, flexibility, the ability to work nights and weekends, and a commitment to ethical and moral leadership development of students and diversity. The candidate must be a passionate, energetic and self-motivated team player with sound judgment, management and problem-solving skills, flexibility and the ability to manage multiple projects.  
 
This position works in an environment that is constantly changing to reflect the needs of a diverse student body. The incumbent must possess the judgment to apply broad policies to problems and situations not falling clearly within precedent and must be flexible in methodology used to meet changing conditions around campus programming, student government and student event planning. 
 
Knowledge: Demonstrated knowledge and thorough understanding of student academic and social development; student development theory; student engagement and learning strategies.  Candidate must have knowledge of, sensitivity to and experience working with students of diverse backgrounds and the underrepresented populations.  Incumbent individual must be familiar with recreational rules and guidelines, CPR and first aid.  Knowledge of web design software, social media platforms, proficiency with all Microsoft Office applications, desktop publishing software. 
 
Skills: Excellent organizational, multi-tasking, customer service, and written and oral communication skills. Experience with creative program development and implementation. Must be able to demonstrate and exercise sound judgment, management and problem-solving skills, flexibility and ability to manage multiple projects and competing deadlines. Must be able to manage crisis and mediate conflict. Must be able to inspire and collaborate with students, faculty and staff in support of programming and OSL.   
 
Abilities: Affinity for working with college students.  Ability to relate well to students, faculty and staff of diverse populations and personalities. Relate to, and advocate for, students. Meet deadlines and keep time lines under pressure. Ability to perform duties with tact, discretion, and respect for confidentiality. Ability to train and provide instruction when needed to users of Student Life software. Ability to work evenings, 
weekends and extended hours when needed.
