Position Description

The University of Missouri Kansas City is seeking a Director of Residential Life to develop and enhance our existing student housing to meet the needs of our growing student population. 

The Director is responsible for providing strategic direction for the administrative, budgetary, facilities, operations, co-curricular and programmatic vision for student housing.  This vision includes doubling our residential housing over the next 10 years and providing a transformational community living experience that supports student learning and development.  Our campus vision includes a climate that supports the intellectual, cultural, social and interpersonal growth of each student through co-curricular experiences. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience utilizing data to regularly analyze and evaluate existing programs.

The Director supervises the Associate Director of Residential Education, Associate Director of Operations, and Assistant Director of Residential Facilities.  In conjunction with additional professional staff, the director oversees over 1,300 beds in residence halls, apartments, program houses and off-campus units.

General responsibilities for this position include:

  • Provide leadership to enhance the educational and developmental impact of the residential life experience through learning communities, theme housing, co-enrollment clustering, etc.   
  • Provide vision and leadership to ensure maximum desired housing occupancy including: planning, reporting, management, and communication.  Provide oversight for housing assignments, billing, room changes/selection process with other professional residential life staff.
  • Provide direct supervision for professional staff in Residential Life within a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Provide fiscal responsibility to ensure efficient use of university resources that align with university and program unit mission and strategic plans.
  • Provide leadership and vision for the strategic marketing and recruitment of students for residential housing.
  • Collaborate with university partners to develop additional housing through public-private partnerships that meet the needs of our student population.
  • Oversee the physical environment, in conjunction with facilities staff, to maintain a safe, secure and healthy living environment for students.
  • Remain current on best practices and current issues in the area of residential life.
  • Execute all responsibilities with a thorough knowledge of applicable policies, procedures and regulations pertaining to the position.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A master's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 7 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A master's degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education/Student Affairs or other related fields.
  • 10 years of progressive responsibility, leadership and management experience in a student affairs environment with supervision of professional residential life staff.
  • Demonstrated crisis management skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience that includes working with staff, students and other key stakeholders inside and outside the university.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and work collaboratively with stakeholders inside and outside the university.
  • Experience with the design and implementation of assessment strategies, evaluation and program/service improvement.
