Position Description

The Office for Student Affairs (OSA) provides services, programs, and facilities that foster student development and well-being, promote an inclusive environment, inspire life-long positive contributions to society; and enrich the University of Minnesota community. OSA supports the University of Minnesota’s goals to create and sustain a world-class student experience. The Director of Student Counseling Services reports to the Vice Provost for Student Affairs and Dean of Students.

Leadership and administration (60%)
Provide leadership and administrative management for Student Counseling Services (SCS) programs and services including: individual and group counseling, Student Academic Success Services (SASS), outreach and consultation, and professional psychology training programs
Manage the fiscal and human resources of SCS including: providing professional development opportunities for staff: designing and implementing an effective training program for employees, and devising strategies that foster the effective recruitment and retention of SCS talent
Administer and oversee SCS annual operating budget; skillfully manage SCS operations, programs and functions to attain financial goals
Oversee compliance with and implementation of SCS and University policies and procedures
Develop strategies for ensuring SCS effectively carries out is mission and vision
Oversee efforts to maintain International Association of Counseling Services (IACS) accreditation
Work in close collaboration with the Boynton Mental Health Clinic to maximize mental health services for University students and participate in mental health outreach efforts to the University of Minnesota campus community
Coordinate programming and initiatives with the Office for Student Affairs and other campus units/committees such as: Office of the Provost, Office for Equity and Diversity, Disability Resource Center, the Aurora Center for Advocacy and Education, International Student and Scholar Services
Serve on OSA leadership team; act as a liaison between OSA and SCS staff
Provide leadership and support for SCS and OSA strategic goals and priorities
Facilitate client satisfaction and assessment efforts for Student Counseling Services

Supervision (20%)
Supervise staff psychologist and bargaining unit/civil service employee hiring, training, promotion, discipline, assignment of work, and annual performance appraisal process
Serve as policy and clinical consultant to staff
Supervise pre-doctoral interns as time allows

Direct service, consultation and University involvement (20%)
Provide individual and group counseling to students
Create and maintain patient records and documentation including mental health history and treatment plan; comply with standards required by the government, licensing board and code of ethics
Make patient referrals to other University or community providers to facilitate treatment plans and goals
Serve as a mental health consultant and liaison to University departments
Serve on multidisciplinary campus teams such as the Behavioral Consultation Team, University Community Response Team, and the Provost’s Council on Student Mental Health
Serve on OSA and University committees/workgroups as needed
Other duties as assigned

This is a 100%, fulltime, 12 month position with benefits.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:
Terminal degree in Counseling or Clinical Psychology and eligible to be licensed as a psychologist in the state of Minnesota.
Minimum of eight-ten years of experience in counseling in a college or university setting with increasing levels of administrative responsibility and oversight.
Experience working with diverse student populations and demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion.
Experience working in an International Association of Counseling Services (IACS) accredited college counseling center.
Experience providing supervision, direction and performance evaluation of staff therapists and student (pre-doctoral) interns.
Experience with budgeting, policy compliance, and human and resource management.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Knowledge of current literature, issues and trends related to mental health in a higher education environment.
Ability to consistently demonstrate a high level of integrity, professionalism, diplomacy, tact, and sound judgment.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience providing leadership and oversight of a college or university counseling center and American Psychological Association accredited training programs.
Experience supporting and collaborating with other campus units/programs including those serving students with disabilities, sexual assault survivors, students from marginalized communities, and international students.
Experience in higher education administration and leadership.
Experience providing crisis counseling and/or coordinating a community response team.
Experience advising/working with mental health-oriented student organizations.
