Position Description

The Director provides leadership for the University Advising Center by building collaborative partnerships between academic affairs, student affairs, and enrollment while providing supervisory leadership for academic advising.  The Director promotes the mission of Golden Gate University by working with students with diverse identities including first generation college students, students of various racial, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, students from low-income families, students returning from military service, students with disabilities, LGBTQ students, and adult learners.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides leadership to ten professional advisors and one/two student assistants.  This involves hiring, training (in international immigration rules and procedures, academic policies and procedures) motivating, and managing so that the group performs at the highest level possible.  Provides and coordinates required training, staff development, performance reward, and team building activities to ensure optimal performance of advising team.
  • Manages the planning, development, implementation, and administration of policies and procedures related to advising of all graduate and undergraduate students in the School of Undergraduate Studies, Ageno School of Business, Braden School of Taxation and the School of Accounting. 
    • Manage the advisors as they advise students on all academic program requirements, filling in when needed or when issues escalate.
    • Serve as advisor to the Doctorate of Business Administration students.
    • Must be aware of all degree program requirements, including course prerequisites, degree equivalents.
  • Identify areas in which technology solutions can improve and support advising services and collaborate with IT and academic affairs to develop and implement.
  • Manages electronic processes associated with supporting student enrollment and advising, including the academic records system in colleague, CRM systems, Salesforce and SEVIS.
  • Serves as the key liaison with university leadership: enrollment services, admissions, marketing, university deans, academic program directors, and the Vice President of Academic Affairs.  
  • Responsible for identifying retention challenges and leading discussions (with deans and VPAA) around strategies to improve retention.
  • Contributes to improved processes through active participation in the development and implementation of key technologies to support advising and retention activities.
  • Consults with Directors and Dean regarding continuing student profiles, at-risk enrollment behaviors and required strategies for continuous improvement in enrollment and academic process.
  • Represents the student experience on committees for which this perspective and awareness is crucial:  IT Strategy team, Data Governance team, Behavioral Intervention Team,  Change Approval Board (technology related), Ageno monthly faculty meetings, weekly Schools of Tax and Accounting faculty/staff meetings, accreditation committee (WASC reaccreditation)

Education

Masters degree in counseling, student affairs, academic advising or similar.  four to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience

  • Experience in college advising; ideally experience in advising online programs.
  • Excellent initiative and organizational skills with ability to work both autonomously and in a team.
  • Proven time management skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability and willingness to work with students from diverse political/socioeconomic backgrounds and a wide range of physical and academic abilities.
  • Good skills in word processing, spreadsheets and computerized database systems.
