EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, CAREER CENTER

California State University, Los Angeles, invites applications for the above Administrator II position.

The University:  California State University, Los Angeles, under the leadership of President, William A. Covino, is one of 23 campuses of the California State University system. Founded in 1947, the University is in the city of Los Angeles, adjacent to the San Gabriel Valley, and has more than 28,000 students who reflect the rich ethnic diversity of the area. 

 

The Position: Under the general direction of the Associate Vice President for Student Life, the Executive Director of the Career Development Center will lead and direct strategic implementation of programs and initiatives that deliver comprehensive career development services to students and alumni. The incumbent will: create and implement plans to ensure students have access to and utilization of quality career advising and skill building workshops that prepare students to be competitive applicants for post-graduation full-time employment; lead the Student Employment Office to ensure campus departments receive appropriate training in hiring, selecting and training of student employees; remain educated on employment laws and regulations to ensure student assistant employment processes remain in compliance; maintain existing partnerships with employers and outreach to new industries and employers to connect students with internships and employment that meet the needs of the Southern California region; coordinate academic and non-academic internships that prepare students for careers; and serve as chief fiscal manager and administrator of the department. The incumbent will: collect and analyze data to assess efficacy of programs and services, and design appropriate strategies for improvements; evaluate existing online assessments and career development resources offered on the Career Development Center website to determine effectiveness and utilization rate; monitor graduate employment rates and identify best practices to increase success; be responsible for the hiring, supervision, training and development of professional and support staff; provide ongoing professional development for staff and students; develop and maintain a communication plan that promotes programs and services of the Career Development Center to increase awareness among the campus community of the importance of students beginning career preparation early; and collaborate with the division’s Strategic Initiatives Manager to revise the Career Center website to ease navigation and improve visual appeal.

Appointment:  The Administrator II appointment will be made under the guidelines for management and supervisory employees of the California State University.  All rights and benefits associated with this appointment are governed by the Management Personnel Plan.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications and Experience: Master’s degree in higher education leadership, business administration, or a related field. A minimum of five years of experience in student affairs, human resources management, career services or a related field. Demonstrated experience: supervising a team; managing a cost center; and budgeting and/or fiscal responsibility for a program. Must possess: superior interpersonal skills, as well as excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to: make effective oral presentations; facilitate an open exchange of ideas; collaborate with and respond to multiple constituencies; make meaningful connections at all levels of an organization; plan, organize, and direct others in the formation and implementation of programs and services; provide direction to professional and support staff; anticipate program needs; make independent decisions; exercise sound judgment; multitask and discern priorities to meet deadlines. Demonstrated interest and ability to work in a multicultural/ multiethnic environment. A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position.

 

Desired Qualifications:  Doctoral degree from an accredited college or university. Experience in all aspects of career services in higher education (e.g., employer recruitment, development, and support; job and internship placement assistance; and training and coaching on job search skills). Experience in human resources management and knowledge of employment law. Experience/expertise in student assistant employment practices including employee/supervisor training and coaching. Experience with program assessment and outcome measure to assess service effectiveness and to promote quality improvement.
