Position Description

Michigan State University (MSU) is one of the largest universities in the United States, serving more than 50,000 students across more than 200 undergraduate, graduate and graduate-professional programs. MSU is a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), one of the nation's leading research-intensive, land-grant institutions and is also a part of the Big Ten Athletic Conference and the Big Ten Academic Alliance. MSU’s strong emphasis on teaching and research is matched by its commitment to public service. At MSU you will find an inclusive academic community known for traditionally strong disciplines with a commensurate commitment to cross- and interdisciplinary programs that connect the sciences, humanities, and professions in practical, sustainable, and innovative ways to address society’s rapidly changing needs. Located in East Lansing, MI, the University's campus neighbors the state capitol with close proximity to a wide variety of cultural and recreational activities.

Reporting to the Vice President for Auxiliary Enterprises, the Executive Director of Culinary Services provides leadership and strategic vision for a self-sustaining enterprise that encompasses residential dining, retail operations, concessions, food stores, bakery, and linen services. The Executive Director develops collegial and collaborative relationships with a broad array of institutional stakeholders including MSU Police, Athletics, Infrastructure Planning and Facilities, Finance and Operations, Student Affairs, the office of the University Physician, and academic departments. The Executive Director is a member of the divisional leadership team, and possesses both a divisional and university perspective when collaborating with other units. The department employs more than 3000 full and part-time staff, and the position manages annual revenues in excess of $103 million.

A bachelor’s degree and significant senior management experience in collegiate food services, or senior management experience within a hospitality context, are required. A master’s degree in business or a related field is preferred. The successful candidate will be a visionary and collaborative leader with the ability to strategically manage and facilitate organizational change; demonstrate exceptional business, fiscal planning, and budget management skills; the ability to work successfully in a matrix organization; and will have an understanding of residential dining, concessions, retail operations, and food supply operations. In addition, the Executive Director will demonstrate the ability to recruit, train, support, and retain a large and diverse staff; the ability to manage conflicts and crisis situations; an active commitment to diversity and inclusion; and the ability to work collaboratively with students, parents, faculty, alumni, business partners, community members, the media, and other stakeholders.

Review of applications will begin August 17, 2018 and continue until the position is filled. A resume with an accompanying cover letter may be submitted via the Spelman Johnson website at www.spelmanjohnson.com/open-positions. Nominations for this position may be emailed to Mark Hall at mah@spelmanjohnson.com.
