Position Description

Occupational Summary:

This is a 12-month, live-in position that reports directly to the Director of Residence Life.  The Graduate Assistant for Residence Life will assist the Director of Residence Life with administration and supervision of residence halls, residence life programming, supervising paraprofessional student staff members, and coordinating summer conferences.  The Graduate Assistant for Residence Life is to assist students in maximizing their opportunities for learning and to support an environment conducive to learning. They will work actively with Resident Assistants and students to create environments that enhance the academic and personal growth of students.

Work Performed:

Management Duties:

  • Supervise and mentor Resident Assistants (undergraduate staff) in the residence halls.  Ensure the prompt completion of all administrative responsibilities associated with the supervision of residence hall staff (i.e.: programming, student interactions, etc.).
  • Attend and lead regular weekly meetings with Residence Life student staff to discuss hall business and disseminate campus-wide information. 
  • Work collaboratively with all members of the Residence Life staff.  Oversee and support program activities in the halls.
  • Co-Advise the Residence Hall Association and supervise officers.

Customer Service Duties:

  • Serve as a role model and an educator for students by being available and accessible to students, while maintain appropriate conduct throughout the residence halls.
  • Develop a community environment by building a positive rapport with residents.  Focus on living conditions that promote studying and support Resident Assistants in this effort.  Encourage self-responsibility among residents and promote consideration and respect among and between all residents. 
  • Maintain and respect issues of confidentiality.
  • Carry out all of his/her responsibilities in a manner that will promote self-discipline and responsibility-taking.

Collaboration Duties:

  • Aid in the coordination and implementation of Residence Life activities which could include selection, training, programming, evaluation, staff development opportunities, etc.
  • Be familiar with NU Residence Life policies.
  • Work with RAs to assist students with academic, social, or personal concerns.  Be attentive and sensitive to the uniqueness of each student’s personal growth, and diversity of backgrounds and lifestyles.
  • Be prepared to respond to maintenance needs in the buildings.
  • Support the campus-wide programming efforts of the Office of Residence Life and Residence Hall Association.
  • The Graduate Assistant of Residence Life will work a minimum of 20 hours/week in the office and beyond on-call responsibilities.  It is important that the Graduate Assistant of Residence Life be available to staff and students in their halls.  Requirements will include evening meetings, hall/campus events, and scheduled office hours in addition to on-call responsibilities. The Graduate Assistant for Residence Life will respond to crisis situations or emergencies and assist as necessary.
  • Work cooperatively with all university departments.     

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications/Education/Experience/Skills/Training:

  • Completion of bachelor’s degree.
  • Must be accepted and enrolled full time at least six (6) credit hours per semester in a Master’s degree program during the academic year (fall and spring semester).
  • Experience in residence life and/or student leadership including previous experience in programming for college students, orientation or similar leadership experience.
  • Experience living or working in a residence hall, peer counselor, or campus/student leadership position(s).
  • AED and/or CPR training preferred.
  • Ability to exercise basic human relations skills in directing and motivating staff, and dealing with varied constituencies on and off campus.
  • Strong organizational and computer skills
  • Ability to develop effective relationships with students, staff, and faculty
