Position Description

DESCRIPTION

Reports directly to the Director, Associated Students Administration with an indirect reporting responsibility to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Life, and serves as member of the Student Life Department. The Advisor participates in leadership on campus-wide initiatives and may act on behalf of the AVC as requested.

The Graduate Student Association Advisor is responsible for advising the Graduate Student Association on broad strategic direction in developing goals, setting priorities, coordinating efforts, budget consultation and providing a broad range of high quality, dynamic experiential learning opportunities that align with the University's strategic plan and Student Affairs goals.

Using student development theories and concepts, performs a limited range of duties and responsibilities within a Student Life program. Works independently to provide information and interpretation of clearly defined policies, procedures and regulations. Receives direction regarding more complex issues and/or program(s). Identifies individual student needs for programs and services and advises on appropriate programs and resources.

Occasional evenings and weekends may be required, including Monday evening Graduate Student Association meetings during the academic year.

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

Basic knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Proven theoretical and operational knowledge of the principals of higher education program administration, leadership, graduate education and student development.

Knowledge of University processes and procedures. Ability and skills in assessing the risk of student-initiated activities, programs, and travel and working effectively with students and campus departments to reduce the risk of activities to acceptable levels.

Demonstrated knowledge of risk-mitigating requirements and strategies related to working with minors. Understanding of finance and budgets in regards to small organizations within an institution or similar structure.

Skills in service orientation, active listening, critical thinking. Ability to assess the needs of the graduate student leaders with respect to leadership development. Skill in training students to set goals, plan, budget, implement, and evaluate social, cultural, community service, and educational programs.

Excellent verbal communication, written communication and organization skills. Ability to appropriately exercise independent judgement, initiative, tact, diplomacy, flexibility, and patience. Ability to successfully interact both orally and written, with diverse populations.

Strong abilities in problem identification, reasoning. Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.

Knowledge of assessment methods and understanding of best practices related to student learning outcomes. Understanding of data collection as both an assessment tool and an evaluation tool. Ability to interpret data for both assessment and evaluation purposes.
