Position Description

  • The Health Promotion Specialst is responsible for: planning, implementing and evaluating health strategies, policies, programs and services for Texas A&M University students (with a focus on alcohol and drug education); providing health training and guidance; collaborating with on and off campus entities; reporting; supervising student staff and interns; and advising peer educators.

Job Requirements

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One or more years of student affairs work or related specialty


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to analyze health promotion needs of emerging adults, especially college students
  • Skills in gathering and synthesizing information to develop health promotion initiatives and educational materials for a diverse group of students
  • Skills in a variety of educational methods including presentations, workshops, trainings, individual behavior change sessions, and small group discussion/facilitation
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Proficient in a variety of computer software applications (e.g. word processing, spreadsheet, PowerPoint, and graphic design software, etc.)
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

Other Requirements:

  • After hours work expected for meetings, program presentations and networking
  • Some limited travel required

  • Strong interpersonal/organizational skills and willingness to work as part of a team

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in health, health education, public health, health promotion or related field
  • Two years of experience conducting wellness programs and activities in a higher education environment
  • Experience conducting needs assessments and using results to guide programming
  • Experience conducting literature reviews, program evaluations, interpreting findings, and developing plans to programmatically and strategically respond to the findings
  • Knowledge of the ACHA Standards of Practice for Health Promotion in Higher Education, and ability to demonstrate experience in health promotion, behavior change, evidence-based theories and models
  • The candidate should have a strong background in a variety of health topics, including nutrition, sexual health, and weight, stress and time management

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience in delivering Brief Alcohol Screening Intervention for College Students (BASICS)
  • Experience with motivational interviewing
  • Experience advising student groups
  • Knowledge of responsibilities and competencies of health education

Preferred Other Factors:

  • Knowledge of health issues and student development relative to the college population
