Position Description

The Internship and Employer Relations Coordinator will foster career readiness of targeted UC Merced students by building and sustaining relationships throughout the employer community to identify internship opportunities. The coordinator will provide direct and customized service for UC Merced students via programs, outreach, career coaching, and the creation of online resources. The coordinator will help contribute to the employer outreach plan and build expertise in the employer community through research, engagement, programming and events.

Under the direction of the Director for Employer Connections & Internships, the Internship and Employer Relations Coordinator will also advise students on all aspects of an internship search. The coordinator will conduct relevant career field research to inform advising conversations, along with creating and developing new career development curriculum in collaboration with other stakeholders. As part of this role, the coordinator will also maintain records on all outreach activities, conduct surveys to discern employer needs, hiring trends, and other industry relevant information.

Key Responsibilities:

Employer Relations & Engagement: Create engagement and participation with potential internship opportunities. Work closely with the Director on outreach to prospective employers to identify internship opportunities in multiple fields including business high-tech. Network with local companies, local Chambers of Commerce, nonprofits, Alumni chapters. Coordinator is responsible for replying to employer inquiries and following up on leads generated by employer outreach. Maintain communication with organizations to monitor engagement activity and track results. Develop a calendar and timeline based on industry to determine the best times to generate possible engagement. On a continuous basis, develop a pipeline of potential internship companies. Identify new internship opportunities with local businesses and trade associations and take action on creating a relationship. Work with Handshake (recruitment CRM system) to maintain employer and alumni relationships. Create a communication system/process to regularly communicate with employers about intern opportunities. Collaborate and implement the communication strategy with employers ensuring the intern experience maintains excellence. Initiate, develop and maintain relationships with a broad spectrum of companies. The coordinator must understand the needs of the companies and solicit regular feedback from the internship companies on intern performance. Routinely search, and at times, attend employer mixers, association meetings and functions to represent the unit and all of its programs. Provide reporting and updates as directed by Director.

Student Career Coaching & Programming: Under the direction of the Director, coach students on all aspects of an internship search. Provide career coaching assistance to students on a drop in and appointment basis. Conduct relevant career field research and gather career related resources to inform advising conversations. Intentionally integrate the use of online tools into career coaching such as Handshake, online resume critiques, online interview practice, online appointments, webinars, and other tools as they emerge. Inform students of resources available to them. Create and develop new career development curriculum. Plan and implement career events such as; Mock Interviews Networking Night, Special Panels, etc. Organize career-related panel presentations, programs, and networking opportunities. Attend administrative staff meetings, participate in professional development activities, and represent at events on campus and in the community, some of which occur in the evenings and/or on weekends.

Data Analysis, Record Keeping, and Organizational Involvement: Maintain accurate records on all outreach activities. Responsible for quarterly and annual reports highlighting the results of outreach activities. Evaluate and modify outreach as needed to ensure success is required. Conduct surveys and other research to discern employer needs and expectations, hiring trends and other industry relevant information. Work collaboratively in task groups and support colleagues during peak workload periods. Share relevant professional and career information with other staff members. Perform other duties as assigned.


Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in related field and 3 years of directly related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Knowledge of talent acquisition, human resources, employment information and career planning resources for job search required.
  • Ability to critique, resumes, cover letters, elevator speech and mock interviews required.
  • Knowledge of UC programs, career services, employer, alumni, and faculty needs and expectations, recruiting and staffing methods, and employment trends required.
  • Knowledge of principles of employment techniques such as the teaching of creative job search strategies, interviewing skills and resume preparation required.
  • Ability to work with people from diverse cultures preferred.
  • Possess ability to work as a lead person in developing and implementing career development programs involving collaborative arrangements with professional colleagues and stakeholders preferred.
  • Must be able to appropriately represent the University and its students to the employment community required.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects; strong planning and organization skills preferred.
  • Skill in working independently and creatively to follow through on assignments in a timely manner and with minimal direction required.
