Position Description

Judicial Administrator
Cornell University

Cornell University... a community that celebrates differences, encourages dialogue, and inspires discovery. Committed to Learning, Discovery, Engagement, and founded on the principles of diversity and inclusion.

Unique among our peers, Cornell is a private, Ivy League university and the land-grant university for New York state. Cornell receives national recognition as an award-winning workplace for our health, wellbeing, sustainability, and diversity initiatives. Cornell is seeking a qualified leader who aspires to oversee and advance the student conduct process in the role of Judicial Administrator (JA).

What you will do...
The JA is responsible for coordinating all aspects of the student conduct process based on the philosophies of restorative justice and inclusive excellence. The JA oversees the Office of the Judicial Administrator (OJA) in administering the application of the Campus Code of Conduct (Code), a campus policy governing community conduct in order to protect and promote the University community's pursuit of its educational goals. The JA is responsible for administering the student conduct process in a manner that ensures consistent and fair application of University policy and respectful treatment of all participants. The JA forges productive working partnerships with students, colleagues across the University, and the community at large to enhance overall student safety across the larger University community. The JA also serves as the Deputy Title IX Coordinator for students. In this role, the JA receives incident reports, oversees sanctions compliance for student respondents found responsible for policy violation(s), and supports the University's Title IX compliance efforts.

What you will bring...
We are looking for a dynamic leader who believes in our mission and in supporting students in achieving their best. You are a seasoned professional who:

  • Holds a Master's degree and a minimum of 5 years directly related experience, including work with a broad and diverse community
  • A skilled communicator and presenter, who has in depth knowledge of the issues, trends and concerns for students and institutions of higher education.
  • Has an understanding of student conduct in an educational setting, and has a deep understanding of the concepts of justice, fundamental fairness, procedure, and experiences in counseling, dispute resolution or similarly related experiences;
  • Is familiar with legal, social and other factors relevant to student behavior and campus conduct proceedings;
  • Is focused on impacting the student experience through educational outcomes;
  • Possess the skills necessary to work collaboratively in an adversarial process setting;
  • Has experience supervising and leading others.

Our preferred qualifications: Experience successfully navigating student conduct work in a complex decentralized university environment, with multiple campuses. Experience with evidentiary hearings and other adversarial and/or administrative proceedings. J.D., Ph.D. or Ed.D. is also preferred.

What we offer...

  • The opportunity to impact the student experience as part of a world-class research university that is educating the leaders of tomorrow.
  • A broad set of competitive benefits, including educational opportunities, access to on-site wellness programs, health care options, 3 weeks of vacation, 12 holidays, and superior retirement
  • An active and diverse community to work and thrive in! Cornell is situated in picturesque Ithaca, New York, the heart of the Finger Lakes. Ithaca is home to two academic institutions, state parks, waterfalls, gorges, and a wide range of art galleries, theaters, eateries, wineries, and breweries. Ithaca has something to suit all ages and interests!
  • Convenient campus-to-campus bus service to NYC (227 miles).

Individuals selected to move forward in this search will receive additional information regarding position responsibilities and requirements.

The Judicial Administrator shall be appointed by the President with the concurrence of the University Assembly. Pursuant to the code amendments regarding the terms and conditions of this position, the JA position is now being posted as a regular position without a term date.
