Position Description

The LIU Promise Success Coach will be a student’s point of contact for everything at the University--from academic advisement to getting involved on campus to financial aid counseling to career development--helping the student to chart and navigate an individual path as part of the LIU family. A coach will work with a student one-on-one to create a success plan tailored to his/her needs, goals and interests, helping students to choose courses; select a major; find scholarships, internships and study abroad opportunities and launch their careers. LIU Promise Success Coaches will keep students on track toward graduation and enable them to make a seamless transition from college student to successful professional. Reporting to a Promise Team Leader, the Coach may specialize in and execute functions under the following areas: Academic Advisement, Student Involvement, Career Success, Veteran Affairs, Student Engagement, Operations and Community Standards.

Behavioral Objectives

The LIU Promise Coach will be able to consistently demonstrate the below core competencies as well as those set for all student affairs educators by NASPA and ACPA.

Leadership: the coach will have the ability to articulate and demonstrate the vision of LIU Promise. In addition, the coach will enhance student’s commitment to their LIU degree, motivate and engage students through effective communication.
Foster Teamwork: the coach will demonstrate the ability and desire to work cooperatively with others. The coach will demonstrate cooperation with others to ensure overall objectives of LIU Promise
Operational Proficiency: the coach will demonstrate proficiency in supporting day-to-day team logistics to include timeliness to work, office coverage, assignment completion, meeting deadlines, submission of time sheets, and vacation requests.
Manage Change: the coach will demonstrate support for innovation and for organizational changes needed to improve the organization’s effectiveness; initiating, sponsoring, and implementing organizational change
Build Collaborative Relationships: the coach will have the ability to develop, maintain, and strengthen partnerships with others inside or outside the organization who can provide information, assistance and support
Customer Orientation: the coach will have the ability to demonstrate concern for satisfying one’s external and/or internal customers.
Solution Focused: the coach will demonstrate a positive attitude and perspective while focusing on student and division needs, tasks and goals.
Thoroughness: the coach will ensure that one’s own and others’ work and information are complete and accurate; carefully preparing for meetings and presentations; following up with others to ensure that agreements and commitments have been fulfilled
Initiative: identifying what needs to be done and doing it before being asked or before the situation requires it.

Principal Responsibilities:

·         Serve as primary advisor and success coach for working caseload of students

·         Prepare students for their transition to the college, and integrate new students into the intellectual, cultural, and social life of the University

·         Support the student experience through the LIU four-year model from pre-enrollment through graduation

·         Assist in pre-enrollment, admissions, orientation, campus, and career activities reinforcing the importance of a collective, integrated college experience geared toward academic and career success

·         Plan and execute campus programming, including campus activities, student success, and life planning seminars, to enhance student life, enjoyment, and effectiveness

·         Provide academic advisement to each student, specifically through the progression of the initial registration upon acceptance to major/degree selection as it pertains to career interests and pursuits

·         Interpret career assessment instruments and provide career resources/advisement, developing a timely career track congruent with students’ academic pursuits

·         Review financial aid information and assist students with understanding financial aid procedures

·         Coordinate with affiliate departments to achieve program recruitment and retention goals

·         Other duties as assigned.

 

Principal responsibilities include assisting with the execution of functions under one or more of the following areas: Academic Advisement, Student Involvement, Career Success, Veteran Affairs, Student Engagement, Operations and Community Standards.

 

Promise Coach Area Specializations: STUDENT INVOLVEMENT

Assist with efforts for student engagement in accordance with the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education  CAS-Campus Activities

Oversee Blackbird Nation student run business

Assist with all functions of LIU Brooklyn campus community service initiatives LIU Cares
Participate in the development and execution of Student Leader & Student Organization recognition programs
Assist with the Commuter Assistant Program
Support coordination of Alternative Spring Break efforts
Assist with advisement of national leadership and honor societies
Help to execute campus lecture series
Assist with leadership workshops
Recruit, train and hire a cohort of student leaders to serve as orientation leaders, resident assistants and student workers

 

Promise Coach Area Specializations: CAREER SUCCESS

Support all functions of LIU Career Success for LIU Brooklyn community in accordance with the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) - Professional Standards for Colleges and Universities.
Assist with the monitoring and tracking of LIU Handshake including: student profile completion, resume competition, internship placement and student employment outcomes
Execute campus wide career support/success workshops, programs and events 
Plan, develop and execute internship ready student program
Assist with the training to integrate career exploration into Promise coaching, academic advising and the classroom.
Work collaboratively with the Alumni and Employer Relations Office
Support international student success and study abroad
Assist with coordination of enrollment and instructor placement of LIU Brooklyn First Year Seminar
Plan, facilitate and execute student employment initiatives including on campus employment fair and career/internship expos

Promise Coach Area Specializations: VETERANS AFFAIRS

Assist with the coordination and centralization of campus efforts for all veterans in accordance with the U.S. Department of Education’s 8 Keys to Veterans Success.
Support all functions of the Veterans Student Resource Center
Create a culture of trust and connectedness across the campus community to promote well-being and success for veterans
Collaborate with local communities and organizations, including government agencies, to align and coordinate various services for veterans
Provide comprehensive professional development for faculty and staff on issues and challenges unique to veterans
Assist with the systemization of a uniform set of data tools to collect and track information on veterans, including demographics, retention, and degree completion
Utilize and promote early alert system to ensure all veterans receive academic, career, and financial advice
Recruit, train and hire a cohort of veteran student leaders to serve the Student Veteran Resource Center

Promise Coach Area Specializations: STUDENT ENGAGEMENT

Support all functions of LIU Brooklyn campus student organizations
Assist with efforts for student engagement in accordance with the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education  CAS-Campus Activities
Assist with the development, planning and execution of  student organization advisor training and selection
Develop, plan and execute all campus wide programming and campus traditions
Develop new student orientation program
Assist with all functions of Greek Life at LIU Brooklyn
Create, design and execute marketing material for all campus events
Recruit, train and hire a cohort of student leaders to serve as orientation leaders, resident assistants and student workers
Assist with the development and execution of the university author series

Promise Coach Area Specializations: OPERATIONS AND COMMUNITY STANDARDS

Plan and execute a marketing plan for student on campus housing selection.
Assist with all functions of LIU Housing operation accordance with the ACUHO-I
Assist with campus efforts to comply with immunizations regulations meeting Public Health Law compliance
Serve as primary hearing officer for student conduct hearing process and serve as investigators for Title IX
Execute contracts for conference clients securing revenue of one million dollars
Manage all residence hall facilities upgrades, repairs and renovation planning
Coordinate all summer conference operations
Support efforts for enrollment and marketing of LIU Brooklyn Learning Communities
Assist with the monitoring, tracking and seeking of all LIU community service related activities
Support the monitoring and tracking of operational data for Promise including: residence hall and conference revenue reports; Summer Honors Institute operational data; weekly Promise reports; student judicial records; university Clery records and Title IX reports.


Job Requirements

Education Requirements: Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s preferred.

Training, Skills, Knowledge, Experience: Excellent oral and written communication skills, High energy and enthusiasm to work with students and propel them toward success, Ability to design and implement innovative programs with a strong attention to detail, Interpersonal communication skills

Working Conditions:    Flexible hours, including weekends and evenings, are required to execute the position’s role responsibly.
