Position Description


POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the general direction of the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students and the Otter Student Union Board of Directors, the Otter Student Union Director is responsible for direct oversight of the fiscal, facilities, and programmatic operations of the Otter Student Union including the Otter Cross Cultural Center, the Black Box Cabaret, the Student Center and the Student Recreation Center.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Responsible for the overall administration, direction, planning, organization, implementation and evaluation of student union programs, services and facilities that promote campus community.
• Facilitates, with Campus Planning, the executive and project committees for the new Student Union and Recreation Center facilities. Serves on the RFQ/RFP committees for design-build, group 2 equipment, food service and retail spaces.
• Responsible for all of the budgets associated with the programs under the Otter Student Union; analyzing expenditure and revenue projections and adjusts budget allocations as needed. Coordinating annual budget planning process, midyear adjustments, and year-end closing activities. Works closely with the Finance Department to secure and maintain project financing (bonds) and reserves.
• Researches, negotiates, and creates systems by which the new Student Union and Student Recreation Center will operate including a cost recovery plan, payroll and benefits, custodial, grounds, building maintenance contracts, insurance and risk management.
• Provides direct supervision to the Operations Specialist, Cross Cultural Center Assistant Director, Cross Cultural Center Coordinator, and Technical Services Coordinator. Leads and implements the position development, recruitment, hiring, and on-boarding of staff positions for the new centers.
• Leads department-wide meetings, planning, goal setting, staff development, and program reviews.
• Oversees department-wide event planning, scheduling and production in collaboration with faculty advisors, Risk Management, University Police, Conference & Events, Campus Dining, Facilities Services, and other campus personnel.
• Provides guidance and leadership to the OSU Board of Directors and staff. Plans leadership development, team building activities and retreats. Serves as the primary advisor for the OSU and all its operations.
 

Other Functions:

• Attends seminars and conferences to maintain program and professional development.
• Performs other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.


The Otter Student Union (OSU) provides facilities, programs, services, activities, and meaningful leadership & employment opportunities that promote campus life. Funding support for OSU operations is generated from student fees. The Otter Student Union (OSU) is in the process of obtaining its 501©(3) nonprofit corporation designation and will operate as a legally separate entity. Although a legally separate entity, the OSU will be a fully integrated part of the California State University, Monterey Bay campus. Pending full establishment of the OSU Auxiliary, employees will be hired as a University Corporation employee, receiving same benefits as current employees and governed by established University Corporation policies


Job Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
• Master’s degree in Education, Student Personnel Services, Higher Education, or Counseling.
Experience:
• Five (5) years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes: advising students individually and in groups; analysis and resolution of complex student services problems; and program administration as well as several years of experience in managing a University student union.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Program coordination/development experience at the college or university-level related to student activities, associated student government, student union operations, event management, budget development and fiscal management, university auxiliaries and incorporated boards.
• Experience supervising student, administrative support and professional staff. Demonstrated success in creating a team environment with a strong student/customer service orientation.
• Excellent human relations and strong conflict resolution skills.
• A working knowledge of California State University policies and executive orders, Title 5, Gloria Romero Open Meetings Act and Parliamentary Procedures, and student fee referenda.
• Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, Oracle/PeopleSoft or equivalent student information system.
• Highly desirable: Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to CSUMB’s Vision.
