Position Description

The Presidential Search Committee of Marymount University (Arlington, Va.), one of the nation's most vibrant Catholic institutions, invites applications, expressions of interest, and nominations of candidates in its search for the University's seventh president. The search was launched in response to President Matthew Shank's decision to step down effective June 2018 following a seven-year tenure of remarkable distinction. In his successor, Marymount seeks an experienced leader with energy, vision, and a commitment to the institution's mission and values. The next president of Marymount University will lead this thriving Catholic institution of higher education to new heights of excellence.

Marymount is an independent, coeducational Catholic university offering bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in a wide range of disciplines. The University, founded in 1950 by the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary (RSHM), was, and remains, Virginia's only Catholic university and emphasizes intellectual curiosity, service to others, and a global perspective.

Marymount serves approximately 3,375 students (2,305 undergraduate and 1,070 graduate students.). A strong liberal learning core forms the foundation for the wealth of degree programs offered through Marymount's four schools: School of Arts and Sciences, School of Business Administration, School of Education and Human Services, and Malek School of Health Professions. Marymount has 156 full-time teaching faculty, 88 percent of whom hold the highest degree in their fields of study. A full-time staff of 430 members and part-time staff of 336 constitute the University's dedicated nonfaculty workforce.

Marymount's student population is drawn from 39 states and 71 countries with a student-faculty ratio of 13:1. There is a strong mix of residential and commuter students at the University, and approximately 900 students live on campus. Marymount University ranks first for ethnic diversity among Regional Universities in the South, is ranked #52 in Regional Universities South, #29 in Best Colleges for Veterans, and #63 in Best Value Schools by U.S. News & World Report's 2018 edition.

Located in historic Arlington, Virginia, directly across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., Marymount offers easy access to the city's diverse political, historical, international, and cultural resources. Marymount's main campus, a short Metro ride away from Washington, D.C., is located on 21 verdant, rolling acres in the north end of Arlington. In addition to the main campus, Marymount has two other suburban locations in Northern Virginia, Ballston Center and 4040 Fairfax, both near the Ballston Metro station.

The next president of Marymount University will join the institution at a time of positive momentum on all fronts. For the 2016–17 fiscal year, Marymount stewarded a $100 million operating budget. Its endowment has reached an all-time high of $43 million, double its value of seven years ago. The University's $40 million capital campaign goal will be met and exceeded at the end of this fiscal year, two years ahead of schedule. The Master Plan, which meticulously lays out the vision for campus growth and renewal, has been developed. The much-celebrated opening of the new Ballston Center was a highlight of the fall 2017 semester. A significant expansion in sports programs and alignment with a new athletics conference will be approved by the NCAA in February 2018 with competition to commence in the fall of 2018.

Detailed information about the position, leadership agenda, and application process is available in the search profile at:

www.marymount.edu/PresidentialSearch/The-Position-of-President

The Marymount Presidential Search Committee will evaluate the applicant pool during the winter and spring of 2018. Although applications will be welcomed until the time that a new president is selected, candidates should submit materials as soon as possible, and no later than February 12, 2018. The new president is expected to begin work on July 1, 2018.

Ms. Julie E. Tea, Partner and Ms. Julie Williams-Krishnan, Senior Associate at Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates, LP are assisting Marymount with this search. Nominators and prospective candidates are encouraged to contact them at MarymountPresident@storbecksearch.com to arrange confidential conversations.

Marymount University is a diverse and welcoming learning community and is an
Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity employer.
