Position Description

The Program Coordinator for Student Engagement is responsible for providing opportunities to facilitate student learning, affirm student communities, and support students’ success through the development of programming and resources focused on students’ identity development, sense of belonging, and civic engagement.  The Program Coordinator will help create experiences and resources that celebrate diversity in all its dimensions, including but not limited to differences of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, and ability.  The Program Coordinator will help facilitate students’ engagement at and within the University and the greater community through efforts that develop students’ knowledge, skills, values, and motivations for cross-cultural and civic engagement.  The Program Coordinator will help facilitate students’ use of the Cross-Cultural Center by promoting the space, facilitating and contributing to the day-to-day operations of the Center, and overseeing student staffing at the reception desk.  The Program Coordinator is a member of the Department of Student Engagement senior leadership team and will contribute to department initiatives and goals, as well as those of the Division of Student Affairs.  The Program Coordinator reports to the Associate Director of Student Engagement.  Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Program Development, Implementation, and Support - Design, develop, market, and implement campus-wide programs and services congruent with and/or in consideration of student communities at Chapman University, recognized heritage/history months, national days of awareness/action, and trends/needs pertaining to students’ civic learning and democratic engagement (e.g. community service, voter engagement, and social justice education).
  • Facility Operations and Staff – Provide oversight of the the daily operation of Cross-Cultural Center facility resources and services, ensuring the reception desk is fully staffed.  Maintain collaborative relationships with custodial services, Facilities Management, Public Safety, Institutional Event Management, and Strategic Marketing and Communications to promote and implement programs, resources and services within and resolve areas of concern related to the Center.
  • Student Organization Support - Provide advisement to one or more categories of recognized student organizations, including civic engagement, diversity/cultural, and religious/spiritual organizations, while maintaining a high degree of communication and connection with student organization leadership.

Job Requirements

The following qualifications are required:

  • Knowledge of student development theory, trends, and issues relevant to higher education.
  • Significant experience in planning and implementation of student activities and programming (including social, cultural, recreational, and educational).
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and execute logistics for special events, including coordination of media services, catering and facilities.
  • Significant experience with, passion for, and knowledge of issues related to civic engagement, diversity, equity, multiculturalism, and student-led advocacy within a university setting. 
  • Experience with and commitment to providing services, support, and experiences for students of diverse identities.
  • Knowledge and understanding of training principles, methods, techniques and formats.
  • Experience in the planning and development of individual and group training programs.
  • Ability to make independent administrative decisions and judgments.
  • Ability to exercise initiative and work independently.
  • Commitment to enhancing and promoting diversity in higher education. 
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals at all organizational levels, both inside and outside the University.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal communication and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy and to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Ability to carry out duties in a timely manner.
  • Good time management skills and the ability to prioritize duties when faced with interruptions, distractions, and fluctuating workload.
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills.
  • Ability to evaluate data, assess alternatives, and make decisions and/or recommendations as required.
  • Analytical skills to assist in evaluating program effectiveness and recommending changes.
  • Ability to use standard office equipment including copier, fax, calculator, and computer.
  • Skill to perform arithmetic calculations such as add, subtract, multiply, divide, and percentages.
  • Strong computer skills in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, internet and electronic mail software, preferably of Microsoft Office Suite applications.
  • Strong written communication skills with the ability to prepare, proofread and edit clear, concise and grammatically correct business correspondence and other documents
  • Strong commitment to teamwork and customer service.
  • Working knowledge of University policies and procedures that pertain to the duties of the position.
  • Skill to prepare basic financial forms and reconcile expenses.
  • Technical ability to learn and use enterprise software.
  • Ability to make travel and lodging arrangements.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • CA DMV driving clearance.

The following qualifications are desired:

  • Prior experience in Student Affairs working with leadership development and advising of students in higher education.
  • Master’s degree or on-going graduate work in higher education, college student affairs, counseling or a related field desired.
