POSITION: PROGRAM COORDINATOR

(Classified As: STUDENT SERVICE PROFESSIONAL III)
Full time temporary position available on or after May 15, 2019 and ending on or before May 14, 2020 in Student Affairs. Possibility of reappointment based on budget, department needs, and job performance. Position will be appointed for one year from date of hire.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Under the general supervision of the Director of the Diversity Center, this position will develop, coordinate, and maintain all aspects of the Males of Color Program, which promotes a college-going culture and strives to close the achievement gap between male and female counterparts. This position will serve as an advocate for men of color to help decrease existing barriers, and strengthen areas of success and high achievement. Duties include but are not limited to:
• Works with the Director of the Diversity Center to design programming to increase success for male students of color via college preparation, access, and engagement; focus on persistence and retention programs and build partnerships and strengthen collaborations between K-12 schools, colleges, and universities, community-based organizations, faith-based institutions and families. Create and implement programming to help foster a sense of belonging.
• Coordinate efforts to identify, screen and select student participants in need of support in order to successfully pursue a post-secondary program.
• Plan, coordinate and implement academic program activities and services to educationally disadvantaged first generation college bound students.
• Develop a robust leadership development program to evaluate and address the developmental, academic, cultural and social needs of secondary and post-secondary students.
• Facilitate positive participant interaction and esteem building. Help to develop and coordinate cultural activities and educational field trips.
• Lead a team that will work to identify and access academic needs of each program participant and develop and maintain an individual academic needs assessment plan for each.
• Makes recommendations to management regarding the selection, hiring, training, and performance evaluation of Peer Mentors. Track progress and provide ongoing lead direction.
• Coordinate the creation, planning and implementation of workshops and seminars.
• Document services and contacts and maintain accurate and complete records utilizing current technology.
• Work closely with local high school and community college to create bridge/transition programs. Monitor the academic success of a caseload of students.
• Assist in other programmatic functions as required, such as special events, to support the program.
• Work with all stakeholders in exploring community collaborations and developing supplemental support services.
• Work with the Director of the Diversity Center r, the President's Commission on Diversity and Inclusion, and student leaders to enhance the campus program.
• Coordinate and design program and services content for webpage and social media outlets.
• Assist with assessment/evaluation data collection and analysis. Compile monthly data into an operational summary.
• Identify, evaluate and propose solutions to program areas that need special attention. Provide reports as needed. Other duties or projects as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution.
• Experience: Equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, career, or personal counseling.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Master's degree in education, guidance and counseling, administration, or in a related area.
• Demonstrated professional level experience working in a retention capacity serving historically low-income, first generation college students.
• Knowledge of campus and community resources for men, men of color, and students who self-identify as men of color.
• Knowledge of academic, social, and emotional problems confronting male students from diverse backgrounds.
• Interpersonal communication skills to clearly and effectively interact with individuals of varying ages and cultural backgrounds and effectively resolve disagreements and conflicts.
• Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate skillfully and effectively with a diverse population.
• Ability to advocate the needs of individual students and groups of students to university administrators, faculty and staff.
• Ability to demonstrate high-level analytical skills and high-level interpersonal skills in working on complex problems from the investigation and analysis stage through the solution and implementation stage.

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Working knowledge of the methods and problems of organization and program management.
• Ability to clearly express ideas and recommendations orally, as well as write clear and concise reports.
• Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other programs or service areas and ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations.
• Ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements.
• Ability to obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews. Ability to recognize multi-sexed and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly.
• General knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of the Student Services field as well as general knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned.
• General knowledge of individual counseling techniques. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action.
• General knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge, of the organizational procedures and activities of the campus.
• Working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned.
• Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters. Thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior.
• Ability to determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature.
• Ability to interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action.
• Ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.

SALARY RANGE: $4,554 - $6,488 per month plus excellent paid benefits. (Anticipated salary will be $4,554 - $5,009 per month, depending on the qualifications of the successful finalist.) The California State University offers a premium benefit package that includes, but is not limited to, outstanding vacation, health, dental, and vision plans; a fee waiver education program; membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (PERS); and 14 paid holidays a year.
