Position Description

Under the general supervision of the Director of Residential Life and Student Activities, the Residence Hall Coordinator directly oversees the implementation of a comprehensive residence hall program that meets the goals of the Office of Residential Life and Soka University of America. The Coordinator will serve as one of five full time live-in, on campus Residential Life team members and will be responsible for helping to build and support a community that allows a diverse group of residents to grow and develop individually and collectively.  The Coordinator will assess, develop, implement and evaluate programs; oversee the day-to-day operation of the hall office including nights and weekends; serve as project manager for 4-5 administrative projects during the academic year and summer; assist in Room Selection coordination and student placement; plan and facilitate RA selection and facilitate leadership trainings; oversee the daily work of paraprofessional staff; supervise desk coverage on nights and weekends; perform crisis intervention; handle student conduct issues; administrate and monitor budgets; provide leadership, counseling and advising;. The Coordinator will manage the effective general administrative operation of up to two residence halls of approximately 110 residents and actively support the development and implementation of the mission, goals, principles, strategic direction, and evaluation of University Housing and Residential Life.

Qualifications:

A bachelor’s or master’s degree in college student personnel, student affairs/higher education, counseling, or closely related field.

Minimum of two years of housing experience or three years recent professional experience in a student services area or related field.

Demonstrated understanding of a liberal arts college.

Experience coordinating or directing collegiate level activities (preferably involving residential life aspects). Experience with implementation of a residential curriculum and special interest communities.

Experience in supervising and training, leadership development, and advising student groups.

Demonstrated skills in leadership, crisis intervention, group dynamics, flexibility, and programming in a residence hall setting.

Demonstrated ability to manage and lead various projects independently and also work effectively and collaboratively with diverse groups of students and staff as part of a team; must be able to work within a department that values initiative, strong work ethic and teamwork. Ability to work.

Demonstrated knowledge in student development including leadership, diversity and life skills programming, crisis management, and conduct programs. 

Commitment to mutual respect, service orientation, student development and raising social awareness, multiculturalism and diversity, social justice, student (customer) service, community service and institutional excellence. 

Commitment to the social and academic development of students.

General knowledge of student development theories, housing management, needs assessment, programming, conflict resolution, group dynamics, current issues and trends in higher education; multicultural issues and relevant legal issues.

Proven experience in providing counseling and referrals.

Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills. 

Excellent organizational, time management and leadership skills. 

High proficiency in personal computer systems utilizing databases, word processing, graphics, spreadsheets, to include MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook and other Microsoft applications. 

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Soka University of America offers excellent benefits. Also included for this position is a rent-free furnished 2 bedroom apartment and a full meal plan (while school is in session).
