Position Description

Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification:  $40,000/year, Full-time, Benefited, Exempt

Work Schedule: 8:00AM – 4:30PM M-F, occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays may be necessary

Reporting to the Associate Director, Residence Life, Residence Life Coordinators (RLC) will assume a visible leadership role in the development of positive residential communities serving approximately 800-950 single student housing residents in 2-4 buildings. Residence Life Coordinators are expected to provide effective supervision of approximately 1- 3 graduate Hall Directors and between 15 – 25 Resident Assistants. The Residence Life Coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day management and delivery of student centered services including: supervision, learning-outcomes based programming, building security, facilities management, budget management, student conduct processes, emergency response and general administrative duties. Residence Life Coordinators interpret and administer university policies, utilizing residence hall conduct system to ensure community standards are met. As full-time live in positions, Residence Life Coordinators provide primary on-call support and emergency response. Residence Life Coordinators are expected to engage in collaborative working relationships with other Housing Services staff as well as other campus departments. This position requires work outside normal office hours as necessary to support staff training and professional development of student leaders and staff.

Residence Life Coordinators are responsible for administering one or more rotating collateral projects or programs in support of departmental goals. Examples include but may not be limited to: assisting with residence life staff training and development, summer conferences, student leadership (ARH) and/or learning communities.

Duties and Responsibilities
Administrator – Responsible for the overall operation and administration of multiple residence hall facilities to create living environments conducive to student learning and success. Serve as a primary liaison between students and the University (20%)

In consultation with departmental central administrative staff, implement and coordinate timely and effective room check-in/check-out, room change and consolidation process in support of departmental space utilization and management goals. Responsible for respective residence hall facilities, furnishings, and inventory control, common area damages, routine work order follow up
Prepare accurate and timely routine reports as requested and in accordance with stated deadlines
Contribute to departmental assessment and strategic planning committees and initiatives
Represent Housing on various divisional and campus committees and work teams
Educate and inform students and other constituents regarding availability of various departmental, campus and community services
Working with central office staff to coordinate interim housing accommodations
Serve as liaison between students and Housing. Provide interpretation and information regarding departmental policies, administrative procedures, programs and services
Attend scheduled area and departmental meetings, one-on-one meetings and all training sessions
Maintain established weekly office hours
Complete other duties as may be periodically assigned 
Participate in on-call and after-hours response, After-hours may include weekends and holiday hours


Supervisor – Responsible for the hiring, training, evaluating, and supervising of residence hall paraprofessional staff (25%)

Interview, hire, train, evaluate, and supervise 15 - 25 paraprofessional staff
Establish, schedule, and maintain staff office procedures and duty hours
Plan, coordinate, and conduct on-going training for all staff
Recruit paraprofessional staff candidates
Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with 15 -25paraprofessional staff
Administer weekly meetings with 15 - 25 paraprofessional staff
Organize staff development activities

Summer Housing – Responsible for the assigned Summer Housing and/or Conference responsibilities as designated by the Associate Director of Residence Life (10%)


Supervise Resident Assistants, Graduate Hall Directors and Camp/Conference staff
Prepare Camp / Conference reports
Coordinate room assignment and building readiness
Facilitate check-in/out processes
Serve as liaison between Housing and conference sponsor
Assist with Summer Camp/Conference Staff training and selection process
Educate staff, camps / conference sponsors, and participants on University policies
Coordinate administrative processes as needed


 Hearing Officer – Respond to policy violations by conducting hearings, assigning educational sanctions, and making referrals (10%)


Responsible for adjudication process, utilizing Housing’s procedural guidelines and University Code of Conduct.
Maintain knowledge of the Housing policies and University Code of Conduct; educate students and staff regarding students’ rights and responsibilities
Investigate policy violation and follow established Housing and University conduct procedures
Conduct disciplinary hearings
Assign educational-based sanctions
Make referrals for behavioral difficulties when appropriate
Work with referral agencies including University Police, UND Care Team and University Counseling Center
Educate staff, students, and guests on Housing and University policies


Facilities Management – Responsible for the knowledge of safety systems, education of security issues, and upkeep of assigned residence hall. Supervise safe operations of unit (10%)


Maintain proper building security
Maintain, issue, replace, collect and monitor key control in assigned buildings/areas of responsibility
Educate residents on emergency and severe weather procedures
Maintain knowledge of location and operation of emergency shut-offs for mechanical/safety systems
Maintain knowledge of electrical, water, steam and elevator systems
Implement and monitor room personalization procedures on semester basis
Establish and maintain relations with BST staff through regular interaction and weekly meetings
Prepare, monitor, and follow the progress of condition reports for facility repair and improvements
Conduct regular fire and other emergency drills and ensure resident compliance with established safety procedures
Follow safety rules, help identify unsafe working conditions and uphold standards of safe working and living conditions


Counselor – Make referrals to the Counseling Center of appropriate person(s) as needed, and advocate for the needs of students (10%)


Make appropriate referrals for student needs and concerns (i.e. alcohol, drugs, eating disorders, etc.)
Advocate for the needs of students
Mediate conflict situations
Maintain contact with liaison counselor and supervisor regarding behavioral health and crisis concerns
Utilize needs assessment and related data in developing and providing educational and supportive programs and services


Community Organizer – Promote a living and learning environment by implementing and guiding community development activities (10%)


Develop and implement specific plan of action for community development in assigned residential area(s)
Develop and uphold community rules and policies according to Housing contract and University Code of Conduct
Direct paraprofessional staff, hall government, and individual programming in support of departmental goals for student development, retention and learning communities
Respond to resident inquiries and questions about the department and University
Attend hall activities (programs, floor meetings, etc.)
Maintain availability and visibility in the hall
Educate residents and staff regarding special interest housing options


Advisor – Responsible for the advising and recruiting of hall government and assigned student groups (5%)


Monitor hall government budget and ensure compliance with established budget guidelines
Advise Hall Government and/or student leadership groups
Promote student engagement by implementing programs or activities which provide opportunities for student leadership in support of university and departmental goals for student development and retention

Job Requirements


Demonstrated ability to effectively manage time and multiple tasks and priorities
Ability to work outside of routine business hours, including week-ends and holidays
Excellent organizational and prioritization skills
Excellent communication skills for interaction with the varied types of building professionals and Housing staff

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree
Undergraduate or graduate experience in a related position serving university students (Housing & Residence Life, Student Activities, Student Government, Judicial Affairs, Resident Assistant, etc.)
Must demonstrate leadership, management and supervisory skills, and be able to communicate effectively and professionally with students, staff, parents and other constituents
Experience with MS Word and Excel
Must have a valid driver’s license
Must submit a cover letter specific to this position and resume
Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check (CHBC)

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s Degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Education, Counseling, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Business or related field strongly preferred

1 – 3 years prior live-in Residence Life / University Housing experience
1 – 3 years prior experience supervising residence life staff and/or advising Residence Hall Association and/or Student organization(s) or related activity.
1 – 3 years experience supervisory and management experience with administrative operations including basic budgeting, administrative process and facilities management.
1 – 3 years experience with crisis or emergency response / on-call.
