Position Description

The Residence Life Coordinator (RLC) is a full-time, live-in staff member of University Housing who is responsible for the quality of living in a designated residence hall at the University of South Carolina. Principle duties include supervision, support for student learning and development, residential program development and implementation, administration and building management, crisis management, student counseling and advising student groups. RLCs are expected to seek out and develop opportunities to support curricular programs by integrating them with residential experiences.

Additionally, RLCs provide live-in staff leadership to summer conference programs and/or summer school programs. The position requires significant evening and weekend commitments and is a 12-month position. The RLC is to be highly visible and accessible to students living in the residence hall.

Specific Responsibilities Include:

Academic Enhancement...Provide leadership in the development and implementation of residential learning communities; Facilitate working partnerships with campus partners; Coordinate Community Education Teams (CETs) involving students, departmental staff, faculty and academic staff to plan, implement and assess learning experiences for residents; Utilize ACPAs 10 Essential Principles of a Residential Curriculum to guide decision making; Provide leadership and direction for building staff; Advise individual residents; Maintain awareness of resident concerns through regular student contact; Support, interpret, implement and enforce university and departmental policies and procedures; Assist in the student conduct process as a hearing officer.

Community Enhancement...Create and implement inclusive, supportive communities that foster and enhance students' learning, development and academic success; Promote diverse and appropriate developmental activities; Provide leadership and direction for hall staff; Advise hall government and student groups to develop and maintain effective community governance and to foster leadership opportunities; Be visible on floors, talking informally with residents about academic, personal or community success, issues or concerns.

Administrative and Building Management...Coordinate the thorough, timely and accurate completion of reports and other administrative tasks; Support area and departmental staff in monitoring and administering resident occupancy, desk operations and office procedures; Serve as an advocate for quality management of residence halls by reporting maintenance issues; Assist with the design and implementation of residence hall, area and departmental assessment initiatives; Coordinate and conduct health and safety inspections; Be accountable for the management of hall government and learning community budgets; Serve on the professional staff duty rotation.

Supervision...Responsible for the recruitment, selection and evaluation process for resident mentors (RMs); Facilitate and participate in departmental training programs and provide on-going training of RMs and Conference Assistants (CAs); Teach a for credit resident mentor leadership course; Supervise RMs in the performance of their responsibilities through regular contact and thorough on-going evaluation; Potential to supervise a Graduate Assistant in some residence halls.


Job Requirements

Master's degree in Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling or related field; Prior residence hall experience preferred but not required; Teaching experience preferred; Strong written and verbal skills are essential; Training/teaching abilities in a work setting; Prior experience assisting students in connecting their curricular experiences with aligned learning outcomes; Exceptional skills in interpersonal relationships and a sincere concern for others; Ability to organize and work with student groups, both formal and informal; Managerial skills, including the ability to organize and supervise staff; Ability to work with faculty, parents and other staff; Able to pass a required criminal background check
