Our RD apartments are non-smoking, with an RD pet policy allowing up to two domestic pets (cats or dogs) and a fish tank.

Position Purpose

The Resident Director (RD) is a live-in professional who facilitates, creates, maintains, and promotes a just, purposeful, and secure residential community supporting the learning mission of The Evergreen State College (Evergreen) and enhancing residents’ academic and personal development. RDs supervise Resident Assistants (RAs), coordinate their job responsibilities with other Residential Life staff, and oversee programming and student conduct. This position responds independently to emergency situations, serves on the on-call rotation for the residential community, and works collaboratively with other Residential and Dining (RAD) and Student Engagement staff.

This is a full time, overtime exempt position. This position is exempt from state Civil Service rules and the Fair Labor Standards Act overtime requirements.

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (completed by the first day of employment).
  • One academic year of experience working with college students.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master's degree in student development or related field.
  • Two years of experience working with traditional-age college freshman and sophomores in Residential Life or Housing.
  • One year of experience supervising Resident Assistants.
  • Experience with case management.
  • Experience adjudicating conduct cases.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work.
  • This position is assigned to part of the institution that is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the Washington Federation of State Employees and The Evergreen State College.
  • Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted.  Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant’s suitability and competence to perform in the position.
  • Must live in the residence assigned and remain on campus for the first and last weekends of each quarter and whenever on duty.
  • Must have successfully obtained a Bachelor’s degree as of the first day of employment.
  • Must attend staff development, training, and meetings necessary for adequate performance of assigned tasks.
  • Must uphold and obey established policies of Evergreen and Residential and Dining Services and the laws of Thurston County, Washington State, and the Federal government.
  • Must not advance personal, political, commercial, or religious enterprises through the position.
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality in compliance with FERPA.
