Departmental Overview

Founded in 1930 through a gift from John D. Rockefeller Jr., International House Berkeley's mission is to promote cross-cultural experiences and leadership skills for a world of greater understanding. Since its founding, more than 90,000 individuals enrolled at the University of California Berkeley and other Bay Area colleges and universities have resided in the historic facility adjacent to California Memorial Stadium along Piedmont Avenue. During the academic year, nearly 600 residents from 70+ nationalities (including the USA) reside in the building which has six floors of residential rooms. The facility includes a conference center featuring the Chevron Auditorium with a capacity of 350, several other smaller meeting rooms, plus a library, and a dining commons with a capacity of 325.


With a renewed emphasis on the acquisition of intercultural leadership skills, I-House strives to augment and expand the impact of the residential life experience by encouraging lifetime personal and professional connections that transform lives and offer skills that enrich and enhance career opportunities. For 88 years, I-House has been providing residents with diverse and engaging programming to help solidify and enhance the intercultural learning that already takes place in abundance at I-House. The incumbent is responsible for engaging I-House residents by creating and implementing programming at I-House that forwards this goal.

The position reports to and works independently under the supervision of the Chief of Strategy. It is responsible for designing/developing programs and providing support to the department, which produces several dozen events annually to a broad range of clients. Clients for which the position has direct programmatic responsibility and/or shared responsibility with other I-House departments include: 1,000+ residents (throughout the entire calendar year); the 200-member University Section Club, Foreign Student Committee, 6-8 Rotary clubs and other community groups; campus clubs, departments, and organizations in the Bay Area community. The position supervises, hires, trains, motivates, and monitors career support staff, as well as Student Staff. The position also requires that the individual work evening and weekend hours as needed.

This is a highly responsible administrative position that requires knowledge of and the ability to apply student development theory and best practices in the planning, implementation and evaluation of a broad range of programming for I-House residents. In particular we are seeking candidates who have demonstrated success in engaging busy students through the creative use of technology and social media.

I-House also has in place certain treasured programs that the incumbent will be responsible for continuing to execute successfully: new resident orientation retreats, Sunday Suppers, various theme-based meals, the Davis Projects for Peace competition, and others.

This position requires proactive thinking and planning, a high degree of organization, expertise in gathering and responding to feedback, and the ability to work collaboratively in a timely fashion with other I-House departments. The position also has significant managerial and supervisorial responsibilities.

The incumbent must be able to communicate effectively with all of I-House's constituencies, including residents, alumni, visitors/guests, administrators and campus officials.

The incumbent must also possess outstanding interpersonal, communication, programming, training, customer service, problem-solving, and technology skills.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Creates, plans, and supervises all aspects of International House resident-centered programs, which include but are not limited to Welcome Week, Orientation Retreats held on weekends twice a year (in the fall and spring semesters), Sunday Suppers, the Resident Concert, some Resident Council-sponsored trips and activities, and other events as needed.
  • Co-designs and co-facilitates specialized training programs for Interdepartmental Student Staff as needed.
  • In collaboration with other I-House departments, engages in strategic planning to align priorities, including working with relevant Standing Committees of the Board of Directors.
  • Explores, designs, facilitates, and initiates programs, services and resources to increase the sense of community, and to forward the I-House mission of promoting intercultural understanding, respect, and leadership across cultures for a more just and peaceful world;
  • Partners with and establishes campus partners in order to create mutually beneficial student development activities.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with internal and external campus stakeholders critical to program success.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, supervises and evaluates student staff and professional volunteers.
  • Supervises and manages student staff, who assist in planning, coordinating, and implementing resident-initiated activities as well as other sponsored programs under the purview of the incumbent.
  • Responsible for recruiting and conducting Resident Council elections.
  • Designs new programs and services to maximize resident participation in programs for building community, and which increase a sense of belonging and enact the I-House Mission.
  • Facilitates leadership development activities for student Program Assistants.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends on occasion is required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

    Required Qualifications

    This position requires a Bachelor's degree, with a minimum of 5 years professional student activities experience or directly related experience in either student affairs or student services administration. Work experience may not be substituted for the Bachelor's degree requirement for this position.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Personnel, Counseling, or Communications or a related field is strongly preferred. Experience in the practical application of intercultural theory is preferred.

    Salary & Benefits

    $4591.67 (minimum) - $7,000.00 (midpoint) monthly
