Overview of Position
The Residential Learning Coordinator (RLC) is a professional member of the Student Life staff. The RLC works within their assigned residential area to foster a living-learning environment that is conducive to community development, supportive of student learning, advance diversity, inclusion, and civic engagement initiatives, and promotes student health while enhancing the quality of life for students living on-campus. Reporting to the Director of Residential Life, the RLC is a 12-month position that serves under the general auspices of the Dean of Students Office, which includes Residential Life and Housing, the Counseling Center, the Health Center, and the Student Conduct and Support office.

Qualifications include a Master’s Degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs, College Student Personnel, Counseling, Education, or related field, and previous experience in Residence Life. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate commitment to intercultural competency development and foster a collaborative multicultural environment.
The responsibilities of the Residential Learning Coordinator (RLC) position include, but are not limited to the following:
Supervision & Student Support:
Select, train, supervise, and evaluate diverse student employees.
- Supervise 8-12 Resident Assistants and 8 hall desk attendants.
- Provides developmental training and guidance for staff members and students to increase multicultural and intercultural competence.
- Provide ongoing guidance, advisement, and individual training/skill development for Resident Assistants.
- Conduct meetings with individual Resident Assistants at least bi-weekly and staff meetings weekly.
- Assist with the recruitment, selection, training, development, and evaluation of diverse and interculturally competent student staff.
- Participates in ongoing training, which includes but is not limited to professional staff training and student staff training.
Provide general support and assistance to individuals and student groups within the residence hall(s).
- Respond to and manage personal and environmental crises and emergencies within the hall(s).
- Participates in the on-call rotating duty schedule for the campus community and respond to emergency calls on a 24-hour basis.
- Campus-wide crisis/emergency response responsibilities.
- Support and respond to issues related to students of concern during and after regular business hours, which include but are not limited to: welfare checks for students of concern, students of concern meetings and follow up communication, follow up of parent/family phones calls and communication.
- Mediate interpersonal and inter-group conflict while promoting skill development in communication and problem-solving.
- Serve as resource/referral agent for campus and community resources such as the Counseling Center, as well as Career Center, Academic Support Services, Student Life, Student Financial Services, and the University Police Department.
- Advise the resident House Council.
Programming & Community Development:
Plan, coordinate, and implement programs and activities that promote student learning and development.
- Assess the needs and interests of a diverse student body through formal and informal means (personal contact, surveys, focus groups, etc.).
- Builds community with staff members and residential students by creating opportunities for student engagement in dialogue, interaction, and perspective-taking within their communities.
- Actively engage student staff members and residence hall students in programming, training, and dialogue specific to understanding diversity and inclusion.
- Identify and coordinate programs and activities that advance University and departmental goals and objectives relative to student learning.
- Develop collaborative relationships with faculty to increase their presence and involvement in functions and activities within the hall.
- Develop manuals, educational materials, and training programs for residence hall students and staff.
Promote student learning and the creation of civil, respectful communities.
- Create and maintain communities that are welcoming and accepting of people of all abilities, ancestry, ages, ethnicities, class, gender identities or expressions, nationality of origin, race and color, religions, spirituality, sex, sexual orientation, size, and veteran status.
- Assist students to manage and mediate conflict through skill development in critical thinking, decision making, and problem-solving.
- Teach students positive community values and the relationships between rights, responsibilities, and respect.
- In conjunction with student staff, confront and document inappropriate student behavior.
- Actively confront situations of intolerance and bias that result from a lack of knowledge and respect.
- Encourage students to take responsibility for their actions through judicial hearings and appropriate sanctioning.
Safety & Security:
Provide leadership for safety and security initiatives in the residence hall.
- Develop programs and policies that enhance the safety and security of the residence hall environment.
- Supervise Front Desk Attendants who perform nighttime security functions.
- Monitor compliance with hall escort, guest, and visitation policies.
Coordinate the general administration and operation of the residence hall.
- Maintain accurate and updated information regarding residence hall occupancy.
- Supervise the orderly and efficient opening and closing of the residence hall.
- Prepare necessary reports and records regarding work requests, damages, inventories, and billing.
Monitor the physical condition of the residence hall environment.
- Establish and develop positive working relationships with Physical Plant Services and Housekeeping Services to promote a safe, clean, comfortable hall environment.
- Respond to student concerns regarding the condition of individual rooms and common areas and report maintenance or repair needs to appropriate personnel.
- Supervise, maintain, and evaluate special facilities such as computer labs, recreation rooms, television lounges, etc.
- Maintain an accurate inventory of furnishings, keys, and hall equipment.
- Inspect individual rooms upon student check-in and check-out, reporting any damages and/or maintenance needs.
- Actively engage and participate in assigned 10-15 hours per week collateral experience within one of the following functional areas within the Division of Student Life: New Student Orientation, Student Activities, Judicial Affairs, Housing Operations, Career Services, Diversity and Inclusion, Living-Learning Communities, and RA Selection and Training.
- May serve on various University standing and ad hoc committees and task forces.
