Position Description

The Student Development Specialist for Advising, Career, and Transfer Services provides career information, academic advising, and transfer planning services to students in all majors, with primary emphasis on providing outreach to international students.  This position is responsible for advising a large cohort of currently enrolled students, serving as a conduit for students to access other academic support services, financial aid, and co-curricular activities to support their success. 

Duties include, but are not limited to, advising students by appointment in face-to-face or online environments; assisting students in navigating and understanding college, including selecting a major, degree and course requirements; using online resources including Focus 2, O*Net, ARTSYS, the College catalog, and other academic and career resources to provide student with up-to-date and accurate information; documenting all student interactions and maintaining appropriate paperwork; presenting at advising and career related events; and performing other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

This is an exempt, professional staff position reporting to the Director for Advising, Career, and Transfer Services. Work schedule will vary according to the needs of the College, to include day, evening, and weekend hours.


Job Requirements

A master's degree in human development, adult or counselor education or related field; and three years of related academic advising and/or career counseling experience are required.  Advanced skills in a Windows-based computer environment, including MS Office programs, and experience using student records software such as DegreeWorks or Banner, are also required. 

Applicants will be evaluated on criteria including, but not limited to:

Experience advising underserved students, particularly first generation, financial aid recipients, and academically underprepared;

Experience advising students of diverse backgrounds, including international students, particularly F1/J1 students;

A working knowledge of F1/J1 exchange program regulations and how these regulations impact advisement;

Experience working with online advising and learning platforms, such as Blackboard.

Preferred experience and skills include:  English/Spanish bilingual; college and/or community college experience; experience leading large group presentations; and MBTI Qualified Administrator and/or Global Career Development Facilitator Certification.
