Position Description

About Augustana College:

Augustana College is a private, selective, residential college of the liberal arts and sciences with enrollment of 2,600 students.  Our current cohort of students includes 29% first-generation students, 23% Pell Grant recipients, 21% students of color and 9% international students.  Our beautiful residential 115-acre campus is located in Rock Island Illinois, part of the Quad-Cities metropolitan area (population 400,000) along the Mississippi River, 165 miles west of Chicago.  Augustana awards the Bachelor of Arts in about 90 majors and related academic programs. 

As an excellent liberal arts college that will continue to thrive through the 21st century, Augustana seeks a Transfer Coordinator and Advisor who is committed to the success of all students.  The Office of Advising plays a central role in providing holistic support to both students and faculty advisors. Utilizing a strengths-based approach, the Advising team seeks to improve the student experience from enrollment to graduation. Special attention is placed on maximizing student persistence and success.

Status:  Full-time  Exempt Position, 12 month work schedule

Reports To:  Associate Dean of Student Success & Persistence

Overview:   The Transfer Coordinator and Advisor sustains and expands Augustana's transfer pipelines, collaborates with Admissions on transfer student recruiting, and assists transfer students throughout the transfer process. The position also provides functional leadership for student success initiatives related to Starfish.

Job Duties:

  1. Works collaboratively with Admissions, the Registrar's Office, the Academic Affairs Office, and partner institutions to develop and refine articulation agreements and transfer pipelines to the College.
  2. Provides advising and support to transfer students to ensure a smooth transition to Augustana.
  3. Maintains Starfish feature configuration, provides ongoing Starfish training for faculty and staff, collaborates with the Starfish technical lead in ITS, and implements new functionalities to improve student support.
  4. Participates in student success and retention efforts including both proactive measures and interventions for struggling students.
  5. Provides one-on-one advising to students exploring a change of majors and/or career goals and to at-risk upperclassmen to provide guidance and direction toward a degree.
  6. Supports faculty advisors with resources, expertise on policy and procedures, and develops and facilitates professional development opportunities as needed.
  7. Teaches LSC-300, a one-credit course required for transfer students, as needed.
  8. Works collaboratively with Office of Advising staff on day-to-day functions of the office.
  9. Works collaboratively with Office of Advising staff to coordinate and implement Orientation and Registration activities for all incoming first-year and transfer students.
  10. Coordinates services with other student service providers including: CORE, the Learning Commons, Student Life and Leadership, the Office of Student Inclusion and Diversity, the Office of International and Student Scholar Services, Residential Life, and Counseling Services.
  11. Represents the Office of Advising at Admissions events on a rotating basis.
  12. Participates on committees as needed and/or assigned.
  13. Other duties as assigned.

Travel & Work Hours

Little to no travel is expected for this position.  This position will be required to be available for occasional campus programs or events during weekend and evening hours.  This position works a 12 month schedule with general office hours from 8 am - 5 pm.

Job Requirements

Education:  Master's Degree in student development, counseling, communication or related field

Skills & Experience: 

  • Three to five years' experience in an advising role, experience working in higher ed highly preferred.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Strong organizational skills including the ability to prioritize and multi-task with attention to detail.
  • Capacity to build and sustain positive work relationships with administrators, faculty, and staff.
  • Capacity to build and sustain positive advising relationships with students.
  • Knowledge of literature and practice related to undergraduate advising and building a robust advising program.
  • Strong team work and work ethic and the ability to work long days, evening and weekends on an as-needed basis.
  • Demonstrated excellence meeting the unique needs of transfer students and successfully navigating potential challenges presented in advising this student population.
  • Familiarity with Student Information Systems (SIS), Early Alert programs, and Course Management Systems.
  • Ability to speak Spanish highly preferred

Physical Requirements:  Work is performed in a standard office setting

  • Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, kneeling, pushing and pulling.
  • Occasional lifting of objects up to 15 pounds
  • Must be able to use a computer to accomplish a variety of job tasks.
