Position Description

Reporting directly to the Provost and Vice-President, Academic, the Associate Vice President (AVP), Student Affairs will cultivate and coordinate institutional structures and programs to ensure VIU achieves an exceptional student experience where all students realize their full potential and contribute to a civil and sustainable society.

The AVP, Student Affairs is the chief student affairs officer of the University. Through encouraging respectful discourse and action, the AVP provides visionary leadership in administering a comprehensive range of programs and services related to campus programming and planning in support of student success, including student services; student engagement and experiential learning; and high performance sport, recreation and physical literacy. The AVP assists in creating respectful and welcoming campus cultures on each of its three distinct campuses that promote the academic achievement and personal development of all students; advocate on behalf of students; and foster collaborative relationships among students, faculty, and staff directed towards student success. The Office of Student Affairs celebrates and supports a central tenet of Vancouver Island University: Student Success.


Job Requirements

As the ideal candidate, you are a visionary leader who will engage in supporting a vibrant and future-oriented student affairs department. You are a seasoned leader, who uses a collaborative approach in the development of student affairs policies, programs and strategic plans, and ensures the department embodies the institution’s core values in their implementation. With experience overseeing a complex and diverse portfolio, catering to a similarly diverse and complex student body, the AVP is committed to supporting student success and well-being both on and off campus. You are well suited for and experienced in leading large teams and working closely with community and funders, with relationship skills that allow you to work effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders. Your years of experience are augmented by a doctorate degree in a relevant discipline.
