As January gets ready to show its face, departments will be getting ready to start what I call “interviewing season.” We all know, for the most part, interviewing and hiring in Spring can be rewarding, difficult, and time consuming. We also want to search for the best candidates in a very competitive market. This is why it is important for departments to focus on what makes them unique. Here are some ideas to think about that will get your own FLAVA into the hiring process. 

Flaunt – Impress potential candidates by flaunting your best qualities and achievements. 

Leadership – Be sure to make silent what your department is taking lead on within the field. 

Affect – Be able to explain the affects your department has on staff development and careers. 

Value – Explain the ways in which all staff are valued in your department. 

Agility – Acknowledge your department’s ability to respond to challenges.
